We had a wonderful time meeting and learning about Councilwoman Shari Lauritano. We have several tasks we wish to complete this year including getting a program running to help young girls and women apply for scholarships.

Christmas Gift Wrap at Borders Book Store
December 2009
ANNUAL FUN-RAISER
Pictured at left is Founding Member Margaret Baker with Dottie Allen
This Christmas we returned to Borders for our annual Gift Wrapping to raise money for our local scholarship fund. Our GRAND total was $140, the most we’ve ever earned. It truly is fun to do and is an excellent opportunity to get to know each other better. Years ago our branch did a garage sale in the fall, and it was traditional in our branch, that if you did not participate in this event, you would give a $25 contribution to this scholarship fund. I’m sure glad that we don’t have garage sales anymore! A special thanks to our Wrappers (rappers?) this year: Sandie (4 shifts), Shirley (2shifts), Susan Burgess, Susan Keen, Margaret Baker, my friend, Lea Seago, and Myself (2 shifts). Believe me, it is FUN and really gets you into the holiday spirit!
Dottie
Ed Note: Last year we were challenged by one of our potential patrons to do a little rap for him. Rita and Shirley quickly put this together to show how hip we can be for a few dollars tip!
Bad Boys, Bad Boys
Whatcha gonna do?
AAUW will rap for you!
Thank you, Thank you for the tips.
They will pay for scholarships!

November 2009 - AAUW Arizona Fall Forum
Honorable Ruth McGregor, Arizona Supreme Court Chief Justice, Retired speaking to forum at Scottsdale Community College.
Head table from left to right: Rita Daninger, Honorable Ruth McGregor, Dr. Jan Gehler, Ester Groves, Jane Adrian.
Submitted by Shirley Talley
AAUW Arizona had its Fall Forum on Nov. 7th at Scottsdale Community College with Justice Ruth McGregor, retired Chief Justice of the Arizona Supreme Court as the keynote speaker. Our own Rita Daninger was honored to sit right beside her and officially introduce her to the AAUW ladies at the forum.
Justice McGregor eloquently addressed the role of diversity on the court and how that affects us daily, and cited many research studies regarding the justice system. There was a little time for questions where we got a wonderful feel for just how approachable this brilliant and accomplished lady is. She shared some comical and frustrating events while she was the law clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. Although she only served in that capacity for that first year, her reflection on the challenges, the stories and the opportunities were interesting and delightful.
We had a very inspiring message from Dr. Jan Gehler, President of Scottsdale Community College and Scottsdale branch member. She shared information on the Women’s Leadership Group and the Women’s Giving Circle programs addressing the difficulties that women encounter as they progress through their education. The Women’s Giving Circle program may be one that we, as a branch, can become involved with at EMCC.
A workshop was presented by Esther Groves, a former Vice President and Learning Manager for Bank of America. We learned about leadership skills, leadership reluctance, leadership obstacles, and taking responsibility for growing our own branches. This workshop was very beneficial and challenging.
After a great salad luncheon, we were treated to a panel of AZ members reporting on the national convention. There are substantial organizational changes in the future and we will learn more about that as the year unfolds.
